Charlie and Mallie's Journey to Hope

At just two years old, Charlie, along with his baby sister, Mallie, were removed from their home. Their parents were trapped in drug addiction and domestic violence, which made the home unsafe for the kids. Despite their mother’s attempt at rehab, she could not overcome her addiction and was eventually sentenced to prison. Their father remained absent through the case.

The Judge appointed a CASA volunteer, Jody, to advocate for the children’s needs both in and out of court to ensure that their best interests were being met at all times.

At first, the kids were placed in a kinship foster home with their aunt, which seemed like a perfect fit, but Jody quickly grew concerned about the level of care the children were receiving. Charlie, diagnosed with autism, required special services and therapies that the foster family was not providing. Mallie had her own health needs that required monitoring from birth. The foster family did not prioritize their care, leaving them in an unsafe situation once again.

As it became clear to Jody that the children’s needs were not being met, she took immediate action. Jody fought fiercely to move Charlie and Mallie to a safe home where their needs could be fully addressed. Her persistence led to a breakthrough when the children were placed in the care of their loving grandparents. In their new home, the children received constant love and attention. Charlie immediately began receiving the multiple therapy sessions he needed, and over time, his development improved. Mallie also thrived in the more nurturing environment.

After nearly two years in foster care, Charlie and Mallie’s grandparents were granted legal guardianship. Everyone, especially Jody, was overjoyed.

Jody's dedication and commitment to Charlie and Mallie ensured their safety and gave them an opportunity for a future filled with hope and stability, proving that determination and compassion can truly change a child's future.
